bit of an update due methinks -

chargecooler pump bearing failed as a result of me letting it run dry. Note to self :- don't do that again. I've disabled the pump and plumped in the old air cooler unit so at least the car is useable. I'll refit the chargecooler in the new year.

Still haven't fixed the exhaust and it still bangs but I do know it's the U bracket that's hitting the subframe. Hopefully be able to rotate the bracket round away from the frame.

Bought some 2nd hand alloys. Oz black 5 spokes 8 x 17 ET35 and 9 x 17 ET35. Gulp. I was reliably informed they will fit but until I've got tyres on them and bolted up I am worrying lol. Need to buy spigot rings and yet another bloody set of locking / wheel nuts. That will be the 3rd set doh! Oh and the matter of having to buy another 4 Goodyear F1 tyres is going to hurt also.

Merry xmas all

er pretty awesome driving lol -

funnily enough not by me but some lunatic in a bmw 320. I don't know how this guy ended up at the back of the start grid but he doesn't stay there for long. Got to love sequential gearboxes. Turn up the speakers but be aware of the high pitched scream of the gearbox, maybe it was a passenger I dunno.

went for a run -

just because it was dry and sunny. Er the exhaust really really rattles (bangs) on the underside of the car under boost but it was such a nice day I did not care a jot.

I took a run out past Drymen upto the Trossachs and round by Stirling. A great day for a nice run. Car entertained as ever. Wonder how many nice days are left before the dark winter days.....

MOT passed -

yea! Now the exhaust is knocking on the subframe god dammit! Hopefully fix it this weekend but I may cheer myself up with a new set of wheels.....

Failed MOT -

Pah Pah! Yes the car failed it's MOT but that's the first one it's failed in 5 tests so not too shabby a run.

Failures were

  • 1 number plate lightbulb out - test your lights at night kiddies

  • exhaust leaking - bolts loose. Shame they couldn't tell me exactly where it's leaking

  • Emissions failed - that would be because you tested as SW20 - 3SGE not SW20 - £s-GTE

Hopefully get the exhaust sorted this weekend, the light bulb too and then retest with the correct emissions. It's a wonderful life....

the IMOC drive - sunday -

on the Saturday night we had all gone to the pub for a hot meal and some cold beer. Needless to say myself and Mark decided to get totally tanked in order to endure the night ahead. At least if the tents were not there we'd be too pissed to get upset about it.

After a fantastic meal we ended up heading to The Arch Inn, handily located beside the campsite. Drank in there to closing time and staggered out the back door to the campsite. After finding the tents still there I realised Mark was missing. So I phoned him and he'd got lost! In Ullapool, I mean that's a good trick. So he turns up eventually and all is good. The nights sleep was ok, I got slightly wet as my tent turns out to be a single skin despite the brochure suggesting it was a two layer tent. Pah, but to be fair it wasn't too bad. Besides I was sleeping completely dressed lol so getting cold wasn't an option.

Anyways, in the morning we just shoved our tents into the cars and after getting cleaned up and washed headed off to the Hotel to meet the others for some fabby cooked breakfast. They were all amazed we made it looking so healthy and happy looking.

After breaky we trotted off to get the cars and then the drive started. After heading north for a few miles towards Lochinver we took a cut off for the coast road and ran down some lovely roads. Not fast at all for a couple of reasons. Weather was the usual damp / rain / dry / wet but the single track road wasn't the best for speed testing but when the scenery it like so, you don't care about speed.

What follows is a collection of pictures taken on the roads to Lochinver -> Durness then Tongue. Enjoy them, I had a ball driving these roads.

The trip was amazing, really really enjoyable despite the changing weather. The full catalogue of pics can be found on my website at IMOC run pictures. Awesome trip, will have to do that road again.

Take it easy out there folks

IMOC Ullapool drive -

finally some details about the trip.

Left Glasgow around 715am (ulp) and drove up to Aviemore via Rannoch Moore -> Fort William -> Newtonmore then finally Aviemore itself. The Newtonmore section of the journey is just stunning, stunning views and the road is mostly free flowing.

View along newtonmore road

another iew along newtonmore road, lovely beach

Anyway, the weather had started ok then a bit of drizzle until finally reaching the Cairngorms themselves at which point it proceeded to chuck it down. Anyhow, the rest of the troops turned up soon enough and of for some hot food we trotted. Apon leaving it was decidedly not t-bar weather so we turned North tomwards Inverness to meet up with the last of the group. At this point some folks topped up the ole petrol tank but I had done so in Fort William so I was happy to wait til Ullapool.

The run from Inverness to Ullapool was good though it was a bit wet to really have a good play on the road. Nevertheless fun was had. Got to Ullapool and filled the car with petrol then headed to the campsite. Ah now the fun began.

Having picked our spot for the tent myself and Mark, the only campers, then proceeded to try and put up his tent. Er didn't happen. The ground has about 2 inches topsoil then it goes to rock hard slate, or something like it. So we were trying to drive the pegs in at a sharp angle while the gale force wind and driving rain was trying to pull the tent out of the ground. And it did so. For 30 minutes myself and Mark could not get the pegs to stay in the ground. The wind was intense and our mood was not helped when an estate car complete with family drove past. They had given up cause the husband was in the tent when it got blown down the campsite! Arrrgggggghhhhh..............

So, we decided to put up my tent and we managed it, then put a couple of toolkits in it hoping it would be enough to keep the blighter on the ground. Using the same technique we managed to get Marks tent up. I mean, with views like below how could we not have succeded?

the view from the campsite
the view from the campsite

By the time we had managed to get the tents up we were soaked through to the skin but at least the rain had stopped. So with the carry out opened, we stood drinking, in the wind getting blown dry. It worked too. So carry out finished, we called up the rest of the gang, found out where they were and headed off to meet them. Taking one last look at the tents, we prayed they would still be there when we returned pished as newts from the pub!

More to follow....

imoc run completed - what a blast

indeed such a good laugh, great company and some of the most amazing roads ever. I'm still sorting my way through the pics I took, most are scrap (poor light, poor operator or just plain squint!) but the biggest problem is I lost my Adobe Photoshop disc so I can't easily create the photo gallery. Silly me.

Anyway, even the crappy weather couldn't stop the fun though it did very nearly blow away our tents! A family left the site cause the father was in the erected tent and got blown down the site!!! They packed up and left ffs!. We managed - couple of tool kits helped.

I'll get pics up soon and a proper write up too

braker braker -

well rear calliper on ok, no problems there. Handbrake cables next to be renewed as the gaiters are split.

Front callipers, well the passenger side unit has some thread issues with the top mounting screw and the drivers side pad cradle is scored heavily on the slider. They'll all need to be replaced at some point.

Brakes seem much better but until I start pushing them it's not so easy to tell. One thing we did notice was the front Toyota pads cover more disc space than the generic pads in there before. That's good no?

Wednesday, September 05, 2007

brake pads mmmm -

so there was I complaining for long enough my brakes don't work so well. Finally got round to checking them as the rears had started making funny scrapping noises. BOTH inside pads worn down to the backing plates and one gubbed passenger calliper. It's never cheap running cars but every so often you get hit with a few costs in the one short time period. Pah

Hopefully have the brakes fully swapped and working this weekend coming. Will need to be otherwise no IMOC run and I'll be dammed if I miss that.

On another note, I noticed the overflow pipe on the main coolant system was kinda leaking after engine shutdown. Oops, so being the lazy tike I am I swapped it for the newer cap on the chargecooler core. Seems to be a stronger fit so hopefully solved that issue.

On yet another note, the chargecooler pump seems to be making some noise now too. Double boo.

bumper cam is (almost) go -

indeedy it's very close to being installed. I have acquired the extended run for the cabling and even got one run fitted to the car. Shame it started raining and pretty much stopped play. Ho hum. Got a few more things to do and then it's actually trying the blighter to see if it works.

I have found the mic cable to be somewhat short, actually it's nowhere near long enough to fit into the boot so for now I'll just hide it behind the carpet in the cabin nearest the engine bulkhead. Hopefully it won't pick up too much crap from the car interior - ie me talking rubbish and playing music which others don't like. Pah - like I care lol.

New brake pads were collected from Toyota and a new windscreen fitted. Suffice to say I am skint now but thankfully getting a mate to fit the pads so a few tinnies of cider will ease his pain. Bargin for me really.

funny old world -

dvr set up is complete, in my head at least. It's not so practical to start and stop the filming as my original choice of location gives no ventilation for the unit. Camera itself seems to work ok and the mic works too.

Oddly enough on playback the sound / video was out of sync so we'll need to see what the story is with that.

Waxed and polished the car earlier so that was a job well done (by my standards anyhow)

Sport cam left me negative feedback on Ebay as expected though what was a surprise was they said I had not paid. This is despite me having the usual Ebay receipt, Paypal receipt AND sport cams own receipt with the camera they sent (eventually) AND the automated receipt from Sport Cam when I actually paid for the camera. So it looks like I will have to sue Ebay and Sport Cam to get the lies removed. What fun

excellent news -

decided to get the mic and 12VDC power supply lead for the camera set up. Ordered from RF Concepts yesterday and the stuff arrived today. Awesome service. Big thumbs up.

So this weekend is trial fit of camera ( in cabin ) and DVR to the car then I'll try and wire the camera to the front bumper. Hello Bumper Cam!

Insurance details also updated so all good there. New windscreen ref given so just to phone up and get that sorted. Another 60quid down the pan but better than a face full of glass that's for sure.

british companies - pah useless gits they are

*********** Thanks sport-cam-uk - you're a bunch of tossers ***********

so I buy a bullet cam from a UK seller, listed as Private on Ebay but clearly a business. They stated next day send and next day Royal Mail Delivery. 7 days after winning the auction I get in touch with them through ebay mail as I can't read my registered email account through the corporate firewall. This is after phoning their listed number to which they don't answer.

Unknown to me the muppets respond the following day to my email address and DON'T include the ebay account. So when I get no response through ebay I phone them, no answer on the phone again. So i contact them again through ebay saying I need some answers or it's dispute time. I mean 7 days is too much for next day delivery and no contact. This time they respond to the ebay message, shout at me and accuse me of being difficult.

So I let rip with the facts, they don't answer their phone, they don't respond to the senders post and they didn't get in touch to say there was a delay. I asked for my money back. They have not been in touch since. So it's with Paypal dispute now but because I'm owed 50quid I can't go elsewhere and buy another camera.

*********** Thanks sport-cam-uk - you're a bunch of tossers ***********

new pc - ah the joys.

Indeed, every pc owner has gone through the pains of a new pc. Transfering files and settings is such a pain and that's before you get to the applications.

Now, don't get me wrong I used the settings wizard and it works fine. The files I did manually since they were a mess anyway and that also worked fine. The applications.... er not so good.

Turns out I have lost my macromedia 2004 disc which was not so clever. Zonealarm decided it didn't want to play so that also knackered play a bit. I found another setup, Sygate which seems to run ok so I'll run with that for a while. Macromedia, well I only really used that for the FTP side of things and I'm now using Classic FTP. Not quite so heavy on CPU cycles.

Ah the joys....

went for a drive -

as usual for this summer it was raining pretty much for the entire day. I still had fun driving along the country roads. Met up with the folks from the oc and had a very pleasant lunch. Drive back was good as no traffic along the Drymen road til the Carbeth Inn. I just bumbled along with the flow. No point in going daft at that part of the road anyway.

good news, great drive and bad news - PAH!

well my rear spoiler now has a lovely big scrape on it where someone reversed a van into it. I can't prove it but I know who and what did it. Guess I will have to buy that rev5 unit afterall!

Went to Ullapool last weekend for the drive. No other reason, just the drive. Drove up Loch Lomond side through Glen Coe, onwards to the Caledonian Canal and then by the lochs all the way to Inverness. Was an awesome drive but a bit too much traffic on the Loch side, it happens. However the drive from Inverness to Ullapool was sublime. Utterly awesome section of tarmac that is just built for the hoon.

Saturday night was spent at the Broomfield Camp Site, recommended I have to say. Many many beers were consumed in the pub and then Sunday was spent trying to get breaky from a local cafe. Wonderful when we got it.

Sunday morning drive was then up to Lochinver which is a fantastic road but the afternoon was spent doing the Gairloch loop back to Clunie Inn. Staggeringly beautiful road to drive along, bliss and even more so with the recent tarring it has received. Anyways, on with the pic of the weekend.

PS - the video camera was tried and although I got some amazing footage it still cut out quite a lot. It's on ebay as we speak. Time for a proper bullet cam and DVR setup methinks

not a good week -

camera mount has pretty much been tried to exhaustion and I can't isolate the vibrations without resorting to bubble wrapping the darned thing but, then I can't remove or fit it with any speed. One ebay bargin coming up lol.

Got a nail in the rear passenger tyre and it's through the carcass. Will try and get it repaired but preparing myself for the worst.

Someone has scored the rear wing just behind and above the rear wheel. Thanks, I hope you felt better for doing that to someones car. Very big of you

camera mount sorted -

now just to actually try the beggar. Will need to bolt the centre consule into the car then start on the height setup of the main mount. Hopefully that will provide all the adjustment I need but I have some left in the camera mount for that. Pics to follow.

All being well the fitting and testing will happen tomorrow but I'm not holding my breath on this lol.

good day, bad day

good day - getting almost all the bits for the camcorder mount. Also getting a cheap set of rachet spanners for 15quid

bad day - kerbing the front passenger alloy while parking.

Sometimes I wonder about myself, I really really do. Sigh

not much happening -

weather has been awful with more rain than dry periods never mind actually being sunny. Global warming, pah not even close.

I'm in the process of fitting together a camera mount for the camcorder I acquired. It's an HDD based unit so I'm having to construct a damped assembly to prevent the road bounce cutting the unit out. At the moment I'm trying to use an old LCD mounting unit as this will give me height adjustment and a good solid base to mount the camera too. Hopefully it will work, failing that just go back to a simple bolt down design.

I did however come across this vid, nothing to do with cars / bikes but still pretty awesome

new exhaust -

for the car not me!!! Anyhow I had the chance of a Mongoose aftermarket jobbie so I had it put on in a straight swap for the std tubby exhaust. Er well the Mongoose was certainly throaty but more noticable was the drone it produced! My god was it awful. It was always loud and between 50-70mph the drone was enough to drown out the stereo.

The clincher came when during the highland drive I removed the t-bars and I couldn't believe the noise. I mean it sounded good on full chat which is fine, but just casually bend swinging along the road was too much. It had to go.

I found a Fujistubo Giken Twin for sale on IMOC so I bought it. Now it had a couple of dents on the silencer but nothing that looked too serious and knowing this beforehand I still chose to buy it. This exhaust is known to be pretty quiet so I bought it with this in mind. Also, it was fully stainless so no worries about that ole rust issue.

When it arrived I couldn't believe the size of the outlets! Must be 4inch and I'm thinking no way is this gonna be quiet. Anyway, I'd bought it so what the heck might as well fit it. Can't be worse than the Mongoose that's for sure. So we fitted the Giken and then cranked the engine. Now the guys that fitted it, Caluma and Larry were convinced this thing was going to be LOUD and I wasn't convinced they were wrong but to our amazement it is a quiet puppy. One might argue boring but at least it won't deafen me. Some pics of the puppy complete with dent lol.

Ignore rover though it did transport the mechanic over ;-)

wee update -

ok so I noticed some of the vacuum pipes were looking a bit old and a couple of them even had splits on them. They have lasted 12years in an engine bay so they'll done well.

Anyhow, I bought some nice new silicon tubing and have replaced most of the tubing as shown below. I like it

new shiny blue silicon vacuum hosing

I've also plumbed the thermocouple into a take off line rather than risk damaging the sensor everytime the core gets moved. Ok so it may not be as good a position but it's good enough for my needs. One thing I did notice was the in dash display is somewhat out and this has been confirmed by using another display. Also the thermocouple lead from the engine bay into the cabin is somewhat past it's best.

Some research I've done confirms thermocouple leads break down with heating / cooling cycles and that's the one thing you can't avoid in an engine bay. I'll come up with something else soon, stay tuned as they say.
